The Institute for sustainable mobility (IMD)

In 2009, Renault, the Renault Foundation and ParisTech decided to join forces to conduct research on the future of passenger transport by creating the Institute for Sustainable Mobility (IMD).

Specific objectives

The collaboration between Renault engineers, academic staff and students at ParisTech aims to

  • promote research dedicated to the design of innovative mobility systems, particularly those based on electric vehicles
  • train high-level managers and scientists whose skills and number will enable them to meet the needs of the transport industry and the scientific and technological challenges raised by the long-term development of sustainable transport systems

Four main areas of work

The Institute for Sustainable Mobility leads research and training programs around four themes, involving several ParisTech schools and research laboratories:

  • electric mobility systems: understanding the interactions between the mass circulation of electric vehicles and territories, as well as infrastructure needs
  • business model: specifying the economic models that will guarantee the massive and sustainable development of the electric sector
  • global vision: study the international conditions for switching from the current automotive transport system to the electric vehicle
  • disruptive technological ecosystems

In order to address the issue in a holistic approach, IMD regularly exchanges with :

  • the VeDeCom Institute
  • the corporate vehicle observatory (supported by BNP Paribas and Arval
  • businesses, including Grupo, Antolin and umicore
  • the teams involved in the Foresight Modeling and Social Business chairs
  • the Institute Materials in Nantes (IMN)
  • the Observatory of Emerging Markets
  • the University of Berkeley (California)
  • graduate engineering school CentraleSupélec engineering school
