France – Ghana : scientific workshops to learn more about each other

4 ParisTech schools – AgroParisTech, Chimie ParisTech – PSL, Ecole des Ponts ParisTech, MINES ParisTech – PSL – visited two Ghanaian universities in January 2020,  Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi and University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in Tarkwa. Due to pandemic ParisTech pursues this cooperation online in 2021 with the organisation of several scientific workshops.

Thanks to the support of the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs, several schools of ParisTech - AgroParisTech, Chimie ParisTech – PSL, Ecole des Ponts ParisTech, MINES ParisTech – PSL – continue to explore cooperation opportunities with Africa in 2021.

A delegation representing the 4 schools went to Ghana in January 2020. The delegates could present the activities of each school and the French curriculum in engineering to academic staff and students at Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi and at University of Mines and Technology (UMaT) in Tarkwa. They also visited facilities, particularly labs, in the two universities, especially the two Centers of excellence supported by the World Bank in Kumasi, RWESCK about water and TRECK about transport. UMaT’s teaching methods based on experience and field practice are comparables with teaching methods used at ParisTech schools.

As far as it was not possible to host delegation from Ghana in Paris due to pandemic, ParisTech schools are organizing a range of scientific workshops with their partners in order to pursue discussions and identify topics of common interest.

The first workshop dedicated to geosciences took place on May 26, 2021 on the initiative of MINES ParisTech – PSL (Dr. Isabelle Thénevin) in cooperation with UMaT. Researchers will present their work. PhD candidates will also present their work during this session. Various topics like geophysical techniques for groundwater exploration, seismic imaging and geomechanics will be addressed.

Ecole des Ponts ParisTech (Dr. Adèle Bressy) organises on June 17 and 24, 2021 two workshops on water in partnership with Regional Water and Environmental Sanitation Centre, Kumasi (RWESCK), a Center of Excellence funded by the World Bank. Researchers from the other partners of FACEA project  – AgroParisTech, Chimie ParisTech – PSL et MINES ParisTech – PSL – will also participate in these workshops.

Other workshops dedicated to transport are under preparation. The programme will announced on this webpage.

These workshops are reserved to staff, PhD candidates and students from ParisTech schools in France and KNUST and UMaT in Ghana.
